The Sign Me In! Development Project website

www.christiansigns.co.uk is now live!

The site includes Deaf people’s personal testimonies and Christian experiences in BSL and an expanding collection of hundreds of signs and sign phrases currently used by members of the Christian Deaf Community.

The site is the first of its kind and is useful for both hearing and Deaf people – sign language students, interpreters, those wanting to find out the experiences of other Deaf Christians and those wanting to see the variety of Christian BSL usage, including signs used in different denominations.

We especially hope that this site will spark discussions among Deaf community members about the use of BSL in church settings - Please visit our feedback page and tell us what you think!

The website will be expanded over the coming weeks to include a “Virtual Church” feature – a 360 degree panoramic view of a church building, which will link to specific BSL vocabulary.

This site is the first time that Christian BSL video has been published on the web in this way. BSL signs can be viewed in context and individually, with comments about how they are most often seen used.

No access to broadband internet??… Want to take ChristianSigns with you??…
The website is to be followed next month by the Christian Signs DVD. The DVD will contain similar information to the website in a ‘portable’ form. This will be available to purchase from Christian Deaf Link UK at a cost of £12. Watch this space for more information.

The Sign Me In! Development Project is funded by the Department for Work and Pensions and is an initiative managed by Christian Deaf Link UK in partnership with Signs of God. A broadband connection is recommended to view the site effectively.

Sign Me In! Development Project

We are now half way through the Sign Me In! Development Project. A lot has been achieved, but there’s plenty more to do before our completion in June 2005!

The Sign Me In! Development Project is a joint project with Christian Deaf Link UK in partnership with Signs of God to develop Christian BSL resources.

Internet and DVD
We are creating an Internet site and DVD of Christian BSL vocabulary, showing signs in context with Deaf people presenting their testimonies and stories of faith, as well as showing individual signs for use in church settings.

The website and DVD material is currently being filmed, edited and is going through a consultation process to ensure accuracy and quality.

This website will be the first of its kind in the UK.

We still need more Deaf people to come and tell their stories. If you would like to be involved in this by coming to film in the studio in Bristol please contact me.

Training materials
We are also producing training materials for churches. These take the form of 12 training modules suitable for those with a range of experience with Deaf BSL users.

The modules include: basic BSL and BSL awareness to introduce those with no experience to the issues for BSL users in church and effective ways to communicate with Deaf people. We also have Intermediate and Advanced BSL modules for those more experienced, and BSL presentation and interpreting skills training for those at more advanced levels. We are producing modules relating to liturgy, working with deaf children, mission and outreach, and pastoral and leadership issues.

Each module will be taught in a 90-minute session as part of a training day. The training days will start in the next few months and will be held regionally. If your members of your church and your leadership would benefit from this training please get in touch with me for more information.

Volunteer trainers
Teams of Deaf and hearing volunteers from each region will deliver the training. The first group of volunteers met on Saturday 19th February in Birmingham for a “training the trainers” day, where we learnt about the content of the modules and methods of teaching and learning to help people deliver them.

If you would like to become a Sign Me In! Volunteer trainer please contact me.

Please pray for the Project as it enters this important next phase. We feel strongly that this is the start of something very significant for BSL users and churches in the UK.
