Summary
of project outcomes
The Sign Me In! Development Project has achieved the following outcomes:
Christian
signs website and DVD resources
n
www.christiansigns.co.uk is a ground-breaking website
containing over 200 video clips of church-related BSL signs and sign
phrases.
n Consultation
via a working group and wider network of Deaf and hearing experts
took place.
n The
website includes 12 Deaf people telling their stories of faith in
BSL and a ‘virtual church’ video feature.
n Similar
material is contained in the Christian Signs DVD,
which now holds a unique place in the market as the foremost Christian
BSL vocabulary resource.
Christian Signs Training Material and Events
n 12
training modules on a range of topics related to BSL users in church
settings were produced by specialists, each suitable to be taught
in a 90-minute period
n Over
60 volunteer trainers were recruited and trained to use the material
n Training
modules were delivered in a series of regional events, tailor-made
to the needs of church members and leaders
n Excellent
feedback has been received, with over 160 church members and leaders
trained in the project period.
Future developments
n Training
events to continue to be held around the UK
n Continue
recruitment of volunteer trainers, including regional training co-ordinators,
in order to offer a more substantial selection of training events
n Further
develop the Christian Signs website, adding more vocabulary and more
testimony stories
n Research
is needed to explore regional variation in Christian BSL, as no distinctions
based purely on region were identified during consultation.
n
Funding needs to be secured for all of this work
